A Program designed to help TEENS cope with their day-to-day challenges with greater understanding and resources.

Program created in ACT (Applied Compassion Training)
CCARE Stanford University

The WishList Program is an 8 Week Self-Compassion Training Program for TEENS
for enhancing Compassion & Wellbeing
and reducing Psychophysiological Distress in Teens,
contributing to nurturing compassionate, prosocial and resilient educational environments.

Adolescence is a critical period characterised by vulnerability to psychological distress, and is therefore an important time for promotion of psychological well-being and early mental health intervention, in order to safeguard against the development of mental health issues.

Effective mental well-being promotion and early intervention in this stage of life can prevent substantial personal distress and social cost. It is therefore imperative to identify factors which will be most effective in promoting resilience and well-being in this population.

Studies have highlighted the potential utility of self-compassion interventions as a method of buffering against the formation of negative self-conscious emotional and cognitive styles (which are linked to development of anxiety and depression) in youth.

Schools are withstanding an unprecedented mental health crisis.

The promotion of mental wellbeing constitutes a public health priority, with mental health difficulties being leading causes of disability and representing a long-lasting and major economic, social and health burden.

The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development highlights the importance of promoting health and wellbeing for all ages and accentuates the need to foster compassion and empathy to tackle global inequality and cultivate peaceful and resilient societies.

Schools are crucial social arenas
that can promote competitiveness and self-interest
or
CULTIVATE PROSOCIALITY AND COMPASSION.

Contrary to competitive motives, when individuals are caring and sharing, particular physiological systems linked to affiliation and social connectedness are stimulated [e.g., parasympathetic nervous system, oxytocinergic system), which contribute to wellbeing, stress management and emotion regulation.

Compassion is commonly defined as a sensitivity to suffering in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it.

Given the burgeoning evidence of the numerous benefits of compassion over the past decade, several interventions have been developed that specifically aim to cultivate compassion.  A growing body of empirical evidence has testified their positive impact on mental and physical wellbeing and prosocial behaviour.

The WishList Program seeks to develop mental competencies and physiological states that promote two fundamental interrelated processes of compassion.

  • The first is the ability to be sensitive and turn towards suffering in self and others, to tolerate and engage with this suffering, rather than avoid it or dissociate.
  • The second is the commitment to alleviate and prevent suffering and requires a particular set of affiliative skills in the sphere of attention, emotion, cognition and behaviour conducive to the development of a compassionate mind.

Teens need to develop the courage
to move towards suffering and potentially painful situations or mental states,
but also the wisdom of knowing what to do.

1 JOURNEY with 8 STOPS
to create your WISHLIST

A Program designed to help TEENS cope with their day-to-day challenges with greater understanding and resources.

BEFORE WISHING, YOU NEED A NEW LENS

How are the lenses you own?

Do they feel comfortable?

Do they bring you closer or do they push you away from your wishes?

SESSION GOALS:

  • Give teens a first idea of what they are here to learn and how this training can be useful.
  • Key practices to give teens a direct experience of Self-Compassion.
  • Discuss and establish the Guiding Principles of the Program.

BEFORE WISHING, BE AWARE

Meet your wandering mind.

90% of the things that worry you never happen.

Deepen your awareness of the present moment using your senses and your new lenses.

SESSION GOALS:

  • Take a deeper dive into Mindfulness
  • Key practices to allow teens to deepen their awareness of the present moment using different senses and modalities.

BEFORE WISHING, A LOVING WARM UP

Have you ever been to a gym where you exercise with weights of 2 kg of love, 3 kg of warmth or 1kg of self care?

Believe me, it feels good!

Maybe you are thinking that if you are nice to yourself you will end up just lying around all day with Netflix series and You Tube videos, right?

We know from research that teens who are kinder to themselves are actually more motivated to get stuff done.

SESSION GOALS:

  • Cultivate a kind attitude towards ourselves in all moments of life, the easy and the difficult.
  • Overcome the resistance to self-compassion and nurture a healthy perspective towards self care.
  • Key practices to promote goodwill and unconditional kind attitude of friendship and warmth towards oneself and others.

BEFORE WISHING, MEET YOUR BRAIN

Your brain is the cause of how you react sometimes.

How would it be to choose your thoughts in the morning the same way you choose your outfit?

SESSION GOALS:

  • Understand the interplay of stress, adolescent brain development and emotion regulation.
  • Offer new ways to support teens in navigating the stressors they inevitably encounter.
  • Help teens recognize and modify their typical responses to stress
  • Offer a compassionate view on the topic of teen stress and recognize they are not alone.

BEFORE WISHING, DEFOG YOUR MIRROR

Do you like what you see in the mirror?

Have you already met your inner-critic?

There is another inner voice you can turn up: Your Compassionate Voice.

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.

SESSION GOALS:

  • Experience self-compassion as an antidote to self-criticism, a universal and pervasive source of suffering.
  • Help teens to explore how radically different self-compassion is from the way they usually relate to themselves.
  • Be able to recognize self-criticism and access a compassionate self-talk as an alternative in common teen struggles.
  • Explore the value of self-compassion as a way to promote social qualities and self-acceptance.
  • Key practices to engage teens in a deeper appreciation of common humanity and understand that “just like me” all human beings suffer.

BEFORE WISHING, CHOOSE YOUR COMPASS

Novelty and risks are part of your teen journey.

Have you thought about what matters most to you?

These values can be the inner compass to guide you home when you have wandered too far or feel lost.

BEFORE WISHING, BE IN THE ZONE

When you are happy, feel good. When you are sad or angry, feel bad.

Are you avoiding difficult emotions because you feel you can´t deal with them?

Well this happens to most teens because our culture is full of hidden messages about avoiding negative emotions.

Learning how to navigate strong emotions is in the heart of self-compassion training: “You cannot ignore your pain and feel compassion for it at the same time”.

SESSION GOALS:

  • Explore several strategies for working with difficult emotions. Mindfulness to become aware of emotions and notice where they feel most alive in the body. Then sooth the experience with self-compassion to access the caregiving system.
  • Work with anger as a strong emotion. Look at what hurts and see what you need.
  • Experience the power of mindful and compassionate emotion regulation.
  • Empower teens to become caretakers of their psychological health and well-being.
